Based on my experience, breastmilk doesn't comes out naturally after giving birth. It is actually having the patience to pump the breast to bring out the milk.
It can be frustrating at first. I became frustrated and angry at myself for I can't let the milk out. We all know we can produce the milk, but we don't know how to let it out right?
To start breastfeeding, you must have a breast pump and hot compress. Hand towel soaked in warm water can be an alternative to hot compress.
This is what I have learned and was dome by the midwives when I was in the Charity Ward of Dr. Jose Fabella Hospital. First, put a hot compress into your breast. Make sure that the hot compress is not so hot by trying it into the back of your hand. After putting the hot compress for a minute or two, pump your breast using a breast pump. Then put the other hot compress to the other breast. Do this until there is a bit of milk going out. You can also massage the breast from the areola (shaded part of the breast) outward to promote milk flow. You can ask your husband, daughter/son, or your relative to aid or do the pumping. Based on experience, it's hard if your manipulating the breast pump on your own.
Drinking hot drinks can help your milk in letting it flow. It can be hot milk, coffee, soup, or warm plain water will do. You can also take hot shower as an alternative.
Lastly, let your baby learn the art of sucking your nipples. It is the best way to let the milk flow. Your baby can have a lot of crying at first, teach him patience by letting him suck your nipples to let the milk flow. It is the first patience lesson that he will and must be learned. Or if you want to make the milk flow in a fastpace, then don't be shy to ask help from your husband. Let him do the sucking. But I strongly suggest to let him suck it once the first output milk was sucked by your child, because the yellowish, first output of milk is the most nutritious and contains lot of antibodies.
You can share your experience on how you start breastfeeding, and how does this article helped you!
Have a great day ahead!
